چکیده

In an experiment involving a standard trust game and a costless signalling game, it is demonstrated that economically relevant norm-based behaviors (trust, reciprocity and truth-telling) vary with social identity. The experimental procedure induced two trivial social identities. In one version, a status difference was induced. The results permitted a succinct description of identity effects: subjects held own-group members to a higher standard; and high status subjects held everyone, including themselves, to a higher standard. To illustrate the “high status/high standards” phenomenon, subjects’ “standards” were estimated from a simple identity model for a subset of the data. ∗This paper comprises a portion of my doctoral dissertation, completed at the University of California, Berkeley. This version is as of October 2008. I owe a great debt of gratitude to George A. Akerlof, Stefano DellaVigna, Steven Marc Goldman, Shachar Kariv, Ulrike Malmendier and John Morgan for many helpful comments and discussions. I am also grateful to to the National Science Foundation under Research Grant SES 04-17871 and UC Berkeley’s X-lab for invaluable financial support.

Trust management in mobile ad hoc networks for bias minimization and application performance maximization

Trust management for mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) has emerged as an active research area as evidenced by the proliferation of trust/reputation protocols to support mobile group based applications in recent years. In this paper we address the performance issue of trust management protocol design for MANETs in two important areas: trust bias minimization and application performance maximizatio...

Exploring Relevance as Truth Criterion on the Web and Classifying Claims in Belief Levels

The Web has become the most important information source for most of us. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee for the correctness of information on the Web. An Inquiry Model for Explanation of Seeking Honor and Self-Esteem in the Foreign Policy of the Islamic Revolution (1980-1998)

With the emergence of the Islamic Revolution in Iran, it is questionable whether a theoretical framework can provide for the components of foreign policy called the Islamic Revolution's self-esteem. Those who believe in "Dignifying Foreign Policy" find that in the foreign policy of the Islamic Revolution, the "Motive of Dignity" has a special place and position, so that during the eight-year wa...

Rewards in an Experimental Sender-Receiver Game

We show in a sender-receiver game with strictly opposing interests that rewards enhance trust but do not influence truth-telling. Subjects who reward tend to tell the truth and trust more often in the presence and absence of reward opportunities. The amount of obtained rewards thereby enhances truth-telling. JEL Classification: C72, C73, D83.
